Body deep, compressed, back high, body depth 37-43% SL, usually >40%; head short, blunt; rear margin of bone under eye concealed by scales; mouth small, low, ~ horizontal, lips fleshy; teeth in bands on jaws, outer ones larger, conical, none on center roof of mouth; a pair of conspicuous pores plus a central groove under the chin; preopercle finely serrated; dorsal continuous but deeply notched, 4th spine longest, XII, 15-17; tail forked; anal with III strong spines, 2nd very large, 9 soft rays; pectoral 16-17; scales moderate to large, rough, over entire body and head except front of snout, lips and chin, none on membranes between dorsal and anal soft rays; 7-8 scales between origin of dorsal fin and lateral line; color pattern: body with ~6 white stripes on a yellow-brown to black background; rear edge of opercle with a dark blotch; tail base with a central black and white ocellus at rear edge, and 2 black spots on its top edge; pelvic fins black; inside mouth and throat red.
