Body compressed; anterior and posterior nostrils tubular; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII + I, 10-11; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 10-11; pelvic fins I, 5, completely separate, rays 1-4 branched and sometimes with flattened tips, 4th often reaching to anus, 5th ray not branched, well developed; scales in lateral series 30-53; with large rough scales on base of tail fin; no lateral line.
A neotropical genus with 5 species; three endemics in the Greater Caribbean, one west Atlantic species and one endemic in the tropical east Pacific.
