Body a strongly compressed disc; head profile steep; eye high on side of head; snout strongly extended; mouth small, protrusible; teeth are toothed spatulas; dorsal fin with IV-V spines, no notch after spines; dorsal and anal fins elevated, sail-like, longest dorsal ray 26-48% SL; pelvic fin I, 5; a single depressible spine fits into a groove on the side of the tail base; scales very small, rough; lateral line complete.
An Indo-Pacific genus with 7 species; 5 introduced to southeast Florida.
