Head rounded (not depressed) with few head spines; tail compressed (not depressed); ridge from top of eye to snout smooth; teeth in center of roof of mouth larger than those on sides; dorsal fin: section on head without 3rd spine, 1st 2 spines very close, section behind head with I-II spines (4th spine may be absent).
A tropical genus from scattered locations in all three oceans; 4 species, one in the Greater Caribbean.
