Body an elongate oblong; teeth on jaws in 2 rows, at least at front; outer row of teeth with flattened tips; rear edge of preopercle rippled or finely serrated; dorsal fin XIII; rear tips of dorsal and anal fins filamentous; tail fin lunate to concave, tips often filamentous, its base without projecting spiny rays; head largely scaled; scales large, 16-18 on lateral line.
An Indo-central Pacific genus with 15 species; one introduced to the southwest Gulf of Mexico.
