Body round, strongly compressed; snout projecting in a moderate sized tube, 22-40% head length; bone above eye of adults often with spines or horns; nape usually with a hump or bony knob; dorsal fin XI-XII, with long filament based on 4th spine, rays longer than posterior spines; tail fin truncate; lateral line complete, ends at base of tail fin, 40-60 scales; head and body pale, with 2-3 broad, long black bars.
An Indo-Pacific genus with 8 species; 3 species introduced to the Greater Caribbean.
