ROUND-HERRINGS

Body slender, rounded; mouth short, not reaching under eye, opens to front; premaxilla (front bone of top jaws) rectangular; membrane under throat with 11-18 rays; dorsal fin just before midbody; anal fin with short base (10-13 rays), origin well behind dorsal fin; pelvic fins i, 7, on the abdomen behind the dorsal fin; a forked tail fin; belly with only one scute (large spiny scale), W shaped, at front of base of pelvics.

A circumtropical genus with at least five species. One NW Atlantic species occurs in our region.

Note: Sometimes placed in the Family Dussumieridae, together with Jenkinsia
