Small, elongate, compressed; mouth short, opens at front, oblique; top jaw not reaching beyond rear edge of eye; jaw teeth few, very small; top jaw with 2 toothed bones, no gap between them; gill rakers short, thick, few; a single dorsal fin, origin well behind mid-body, behind anal fin origin; pectoral fins low on the side just behind the head; no fin spines; no pelvics; anal fin base long (40-50 rays); a forked tail fin; a sharp keel of scutes along belly.
A new world genus with two species, with one endemic species in the Greater Caribbean.
