Large, compressed fishes; snout prominent conical, projecting; rear of the mouth extends well behind the eye; lower jaw suspended below head; top jaw relatively short, extending to edge of preoperculum; both jaws with large, well spaced teeth, those on lower jaw larger; gill rakers few and rudimentary, 12-27 lower rakers; gill membranes not broadly joined across throat under gill covers; pectorals just reaching pelvic base; dorsal fin origin a little behind midbody; anal fin base long iii, 21-30, origin under about mid-dorsal; pelvics well behind pectorals, before dorsal fin base.
A new world genus of four species, with one endemic and two west Atlantic species in the Greater Caribbean.
