Body slender, fusiform, with long, conical snout; nostrils on side of snout; mouth a narrow parabola; teeth few, sharp, long, narrow, not serrated; origin of first dorsal fin a little behind pectoral base; 5 long gill slits, all before pectoral; second dorsal and anal fins very small; tail almost symmetrical, semilunar; tail base flattened, with large keel that extends onto tail.
There are two species in this genus, with apparently worldwide distributions in tropical to temperate regions. Both species occur in our region.
