Body moderately compressed; bill rounded in cross section; adults with small teeth; nape not very high; 1st dorsal long based, height of front lobe =/ slightly > body depth, close to 2nd dorsal; pectoral fin moveable, can be pressed against body; pelvic fins short; 2 keels on side of tail base; tail fin large, strongly forked; anus close to origin of anal fin; body covered with small, triangular scales; lateral line an obvious single line.
A worldwide tropical to subtropical genus with 2 species; 1 widespread Pan-Atlantic species in the Greater Caribbean.
