Front nostril low on front of snout, immediately above the top lip; wide between eyes (>7% of SL); opercular spine distinct; rear of top jawbone with a knob at lower corner; 3 pores at lower corner of preopercle; 3-4 elongate gill rakers; no central tooth patch at bottom of gill arches; pectoral fin relatively long (>16% of SL); dorsal and anal fins separate from tail; lateral line with 2-3 rows of pores; with or without scales on cheek; male sex organ with 3 pairs of pseudoclaspers.
