Head profile straight; eyes large; front and rear nostrils open in short tubes; a groove present between upper lip and snout; no head pores; tongue slightly notched; teeth on both jaws in 2 rows; gill rakers 9+1; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII + I, 10; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 10 (9-10); pectoral fin 22-23 (21-24); pelvic fins I, 5, all rays branched, fins completely separate; tail fin long and pointed,16-17 segmented rays; body scaled from inside pectoral back, 25-28 rough scales in lateral series, 1-2 large, very rough scales on tail fin base; no lateral line.
Two species in the genus, endemic to the Greater Caribbean.
