Body elongate, head rounded, snout very blunt; mouth opens under snout; top jaw with large, out-curved canine teeth, bottom jaw with large incurved canines, central canines on both jaws project out from mouth; no teeth on roof of mouth; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; 1st dorsal fin with VII spines, none elongate; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; pelvic fins I, 5, disk complete with well developed front membrane; body scaled rearwards of anal fin origin, 4-5 very rough scales on tail fin base; no lateral line.

A single species, endemic to the western Atlantic.
