Small chunky gobies; no head pores; mouth opens up, oblique, with projecting lower jaw; gill openings broad, extending to below preoperculum; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI, one or more spines elongate in adults, + I, 8-11; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; pelvic fins I, 5 united at base, but no front membrane between spines; tail fin rounded; scales large, usually rough, over entire body, 27-36 along side; nape scaled; no lateral line; body with dark and light bars.
Genus with 31 species distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific and Atlantic oceans. There are 3 species (1 endemic and 2 W Atlantic) in our area.
