Body robust, elongate; eyes large, close-set, high on side of head, up to top head profile; a low crest on top of nape; a pair of pores between eyes; no preopercular canals; mouth opens at front, slightly oblique; teeth usually in a single row on top jaws, multiple rows on bottom jaws;  outer face of1st gill arch usually with  a single 2-3 part fleshy lobe above, 3-5 triangular rakers below and 2-3 fused rakers in angle of arch; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; 1st dorsal fin VI spines, usually filamentous;  2nd dorsal I, 12-13; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 12-13;  pelvic fins I,5, fins united in a disc, with a frenum; tail fin elongate, pointed; body with scales smooth at front, becoming rough at rear in most species; no scales on head, nape with or without scales; no lateral line.

This genus include 23 species from tropical waters in the central and W Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans. A single, W Atlantic, species found in our area.
