Body very elongate; no head pores; top lip connected to snout along part of its length; tongue tip free and broad, end straight to slightly concave to forked; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin III-VI (1st 2 spines closer together than are remaining spines) + I, 10-15; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 8-13 (rarely 13); pectoral rays 11-14 (rarely 14); pelvic fins form a complete disk; segmented tail rays 17; scales on body restricted to a few rows on the tail base or only a few very rough scales on the bottom edge of the tail base; no lateral line.

The genus contains 5 species all restricted to the tropical western Atlantic.
