Elongate, cylindrical body; top jaw reaches under front edge of eye; space between eyes broad and flat; no teeth in upper jaw; with teeth on roof of mouth; chin with a pair of large, long barbells that fold into a central groove on throat; no spine on opercle; first dorsal fin VIII, 1st spine very small; scales large, slightly rough.
An Atlantic and Mediterranean genus with 4 species; 1 NW Atlantic species in the Greater Caribbean.
