Body oblong to elongate, compressed; very large eye; mouth large, opens almost at front; chin without barbels, with 5 pores; preopercle serrated; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal fin with deep notch between spiny and soft parts, XI spines, 21-23 soft rays; anal fin with short base, II, 7 rays; tail fin with angular point; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.
A genus with two species, both endemic to the Greater Caribbean.
