Body elongate, moderately compressed; head long, low; eye small; snout ~conical, projecting beyond horizontal mouth; chin with 1-15 pairs of barbels and 4-5 pores; preopercle edge smooth; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal X-XI spines, 31-39 rays; pectoral fin long and pointed, jet black; anal fin with short base, II weak spines, 6-9 rays; tail fin long and asymmetrically pointed; lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.
A tropical W Atlantic genus with 2 species; both of which occur in the Greater Caribbean.
