GRUNTS
Body a deep oval (depth 36-50% of SL), compressed; head small, blunt, a conspicuous depression before eye; rear margin of bone under eye concealed by scales; mouth large, low, ~horizontal, lips thick; inside mouth not red; teeth in bands on jaws, outer ones larger, conical; chin with 2 pores, with or without a central groove; preopercle strongly serrated, but no enlarged spines; dorsal continuous, but not deeply notched, XI or XIII (rarely XII), 5th spine longest, forming a peak in center of fin, 12-16; tail forked; anal fin III, 2nd spine strongest, 9-11 soft rays; scales small, in oblique rows above, horizontal rows below; scales over entire body and head except front of snout, lips and chin; soft dorsal and anal without scales; lateral line 45-53; 6-11 scales between dorsal fin and lateral line.
A neotropical genus with 3 species; the single W Atlantic species, partly in our area.
