Body robust; large, round eyes that lack a nictitanting membrane; snout long, bulbous, conical; long, angular mouth; teeth long, slender, large central teeth in two rows; five gill slits, none over pectoral; fins relatively short, angular; two dorsal fins of similar size: first larger, with base just behind pectorals, second medium sized, between pelvics and anal; tail fin short, strongly asymmetrical, with short lower lobe.
A circumglobal, tropical to subtropical genus with two species, with both occurring in our region.
