LONGFIN HERRINGS, HERRINGS
Elongate, moderately compressed; eye large; mouth short, opens at front, lower jaw not strongly projecting; top jaws with only two toothed bones; jaw teeth strong and conical, large canines at front of both jaws; a single dorsal fin; pectoral fins low on the side just behind the head; no fin spines; small pelvics present, 6 rays, before dorsal fin; anal fin with long base, origin before dorsal fin; a forked tail fin; with a sharp keel of scutes along belly.
A W Atlantic genus with a single species, which occurs in our area.
