GNATHANODON

JACKS, TREVALLYS

Body deep, moderately compressed in adults; adults without teeth, juveniles with a few feeble teeth; lips thickened and fleshy; dorsal fin VIII; dorsal and anal fins not followed by finlets; pectoral fins longer than head; tail base slender; tail strongly forked; straight rear part of lateral line covered by scutes (large, hard spiny scales); body and breast covered with scales.

A monotypic genus with one Indo-Pacific species that has passed through the Panama Canal to the Atlantic.
