RIGHT-EYE FLOUNDERS, URBOTS

Medium to large flatfishes (to 2.6 m) with broad, elongate bodies; eyes on the right side of the head; a small, asymmetric mouth; teeth concentrated on blind-side of mouth; no teeth on roof of mouth; border of the preoperculum free, very evident; dorsal fin origin over or before eyes; symmetric pelvic fins that are inserted on both sides of the body; lateral lines on eye side, with an arch over the pectoral, originates above eye, with a branch under the lower eye and long branch extending back along under the dorsal fin, blind side rudimentary or absent.

There are some 21 genera and 60 species worldwide, in tropical and temperate areas; two members of one genus in the Greater Caribbean.
