Body deep; eyes on left side; upper margin of head concave before eye; teeth small, conical, 1 row on jaws, equally developed on blind and eyed sides; lower gill rakers 6-9; dorsal fin origin over or slightly before top eye; dorsal rays 62-84, front rays elongated; pectoral fins on both sides of body, with branched rays, larger on eye side; pelvic fins symmetrically positioned on belly, base of neither fin on body midline, short bases, eye-side fin about twice as long as blind side fin; urinary papilla on eye-side, anus on blind side; lateral line well developed on both sides, strongly arched over pectoral fin, with branch under lower eye; scales rough on eye side; body with several large ocelli.
A new world tropical to temperate genus with 7 species; 2 W Atlantic and 2 NW Atlantic species in the Greater Caribbean.
