Head & elongate body compressed; head with pores; snout blunt; eyes large, close together; mouth large, very oblique; teeth in 2-3 irregular rows, outer row enlarged and canine-like; front of roof of mouth no teeth; tongue fleshy and notched; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII (often very elongated in both sexes) + I, 11-14, the last ray branching at base; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal I, 11-15; pectorals 19-23; pelvics fused to form disc, front margin of disc scalloped; tail fin long (30-50% of SL), strongly pointed; scales large (23-28 rows along body), rough; body, top of head, and nape fully scaled with large scales that are often loose, a few large scales on cheek & operculum; 6-10 scales before dorsal fin; medium to large scales on base of pectoral fin; no lateral line.

A neotropical genus with 14 species; with 5 endemic representatives in the Greater Caribbean.
