Body elongate; short blunt head; pointed or blunt spines on snout, under eye, sometimes on top of head; cirri on nostrils, over eyes (1 pair, branched or unbranched), but not on nape; 2 or more rows of well-developed teeth on side of roof of mouth; dorsal fin XVII-XXV, 11-22, notch usually present between spiny and soft parts; pelvics I (internal), 2-3, inserted before pectoral base; all fin rays unbranched; no lateral line; no scales.
A neotropical genus with about 20 species; 11 species, all endemics, present in our region.
