Body elongate, tapering to rear, rounded; head broad, rounded, top cavernous and very spongy to touch; eye small; edge of preopercle smooth; mouth opens at front large, oblique, lower jaw projecting; chin with 4 minute pores, no barbels; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal with large notch between spiny and soft parts; anal spines weak; tail with angular point; scales small, smooth, covering dorsal and anal fins; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.
A neotropical genus with 2 members, a single SW Atlantic species in our region.
