Body short, oblong, compressed; head short, cavernous but not spongy on top; eye moderate size (¼ of head length); mouth moderate sized, opens more or less at front, slightly oblique; jaw teeth small, conical, in bands; chin without barbels, with 5 pores; preopercle smooth to slightly serrated; 18-26 gill rakers; top corner of gill opening notched; anal fin II, 2nd spine ~ ½-¾ length of 1st soft ray, with 7-9 soft rays; tail with round to straight edge; scales smooth on head, rough on body; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.
A neotropical genus with 3 species; 2 endemic to our region.
