Moderately elongate, oval body; mouth small, slightly oblique, opens at front; chin with 2 pairs of pores, rear pair in a deep hole; preopercle finely serrated; dorsal fin continuous, with notch between spiny and soft parts; 2nd anal spine not a lot larger and stronger than the 3rd; body scales without small accessory scales; soft dorsal and anal with small scales between rays as well as a scaly sheath on base; inside mouth not red.
A neotropical genus with 5 species; 1 endemic to the west Atlantic
