Elongate, fusiform, very compressed; snout pointed; dorsal fin with V free spines;
anal fin base about = to that of soft dorsal fin; 11-15 incompletely separated finlets behind dorsal and anal fins; pectoral short (< head length); tail base slender; tail strongly forked; scales needle shaped, partly buried; no scutes on lateral line.
A neotropical genus with 6 species in our region, 2 W Atlantic and the W Atlantic subspecies of 1 neotropical species in our area.
