Head and body elongate, slender, cylindrical; eye covered with adipose eyelid except for central slit; front of shoulder that meets gill chamber with 2 moderate sized papillae; 1 isolated finlet behind dorsal and anal fins; pectorals of adults shorter than head; tail base slender; tail strongly forked; scales on straight part of lateral line forming scutes (hard, spiny plates); branches of lateral line extending onto nape only.
A circumtropical genus with 12 species; 2 circumtropical and 1 Pan-Atlantic species in our region.
