Head & body a strongly compressed oval; lower body profile strongly convex, more so than upper profile; pectoral longer than head, curved; dorsal fin IX; dorsal and anal fins low, no finlets after both; tail base slender; tail strongly forked; lateral line scutes small, weak; scales small, over most of body.
A neotropical genus restricted to the eastern Pacific (1 endemic species) and Atlantic (1 Pan-Atlantic species).
