Body robust, quadrangular, depth 21-34% of SL; head relatively deep, squarish to rounded in profile; no barbel on rear edge of top lip; fleshy ridge along midline before dorsal fin; operculum with a short, blunt spine; preoperculum serrated; dorsal fin VII-X, 23-27 rays; anal I-II, 20-26; scales rough on body, smooth on head.
A new world genus with 11 species; there are 6 shallow water species (plus 2 deep water species) in our region, 4 endemics, 1 NW Atlantic and 1 W Atlantic.
