Body elongate, moderately compressed; rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; preopercle regularly serrated, no spur with enlarged spines; gill rakers 13-31; dorsal X, 10-14, front spines not distinctly elevated, nor with filaments; anal fin III, 6-8; pectoral fin 13-18; pelvics inserted before pectoral base; tail with rounded, straight or slightly concave edge, 13-15 branched rays; scales rough, relatively large, 39-63 on lateral line.

A tropical to temperate genus of 28 species, occurs on both sides of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the western Indian Ocean as well as our region; represented here by 13 species: 5 endemics, 1 NW Atlantic and 8 W Atlantic.
