Caribbean Barbier

Body an elongate oval, strongly compressed; head bluntly pointed, strongly compressed; eye moderate to large, without fleshy papillae on its border; front and rear nostrils close together, rear edge of front nostril without a filament; mouth strongly oblique, lower jaw projecting, rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; tooth patch on center of roof of mouth chevron shaped to triangular, not prolonged at rear; preoperculum serrated, lower corner without forward pointing spines; 36-43 gill rakers; dorsal fin with X,13-16, spines IV-VI longest, longest 10-21% SL, filaments not fused to spine-tips; anal fin III, 7-9; pectorals 15-21; pelvic inserted slightly before base of pectoral; tail strongly concave, lobe tips with filaments; scales, rough, 36-53 on lateral line, 22-29 around tail base; top jaw, snout, between eyes, and throat without scales; scales without accessory scales; lateral line complete.

Color: Female: Head and body reddish above with brown tones around scale edges on upper head and back, a red band along dorsal profile, upper body with indistinct small yellow spots, lower body pale; sometimes a bluish sheen on body, and small blue spots in vertical rows; lower belly and chest silvery white; iris with blue sections at top and bottom, red in central section; two yellow stripes on head, one from rear of eye to rear of operculum, with a yellow spot on operculum above the end of that stripe, a second stripe from both top lips along under eye and angles slightly down to lower corner of operculum, irregular yellow spotting on rear edge of operculum; dorsal fin: spinous part with purplish spines, fin membranes blotched with purple and yellow, tips of spines yellow, soft dorsal translucent, rays with yellow bases, purplish centers, yellow tips, central part of fin membranes blotched with yellow; caudal fin lobes with reddish centers, bright yellow upper and lower borders; center of fish translucent purple with yellow blotches; anal fin translucent blue, with yellow blotches and a yellow border; pectoral base red, without yellow bar, fin translucent with reddish rays; pelvic fins translucent blue, with yellow front margins. Male: head and body colors similar to female; dorsal fin pale purple, with a yellow border and yellow dorsal spine tips and elongated spines, soft dorsal also with irregular yellow blotching; caudal fin red, with a translucent purplish rear and yellow top and bottom borders; anal fin with bluish to purplish lower half, yellow outer half; pectorals pink; NO yellow bar on fin base; pelvic fins translucent purple with a lengthwise yellow band down front third of fin. Juvenile: head, body and caudal fin similar to adults; dorsal fin translucent yellow, with red rays, outer edge with a broad band of yellow; anal fin translucent with yellow tones; pectorals translucent; pelvic fins yellow, with thin bluish front margin.

Reaches about 20 cm.
