Head profile straight; eyes large; a groove present between upper lip and snout; no head pores; front nostril a short tube, rear nostril a hole; teeth in both jaws in 2 rows, teeth thin, straight, pointed; gill rakers 9+1; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI + I, 9; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 9; pectoral fin 19; pelvic fins I, 5, all rays branched, fins completely joined by a membrane to form a round disc, rearch to just before anus, tips of rays not ending in fleshy pads; tail fin blunt, straight rear edge, 17 segmented rays, 14 branched rays; body scaled from inside pectoral to rear, with 24 rough scales in lateral series, a pair of very rough scales on tail fin base; rough scales on abdomen; no lateral line.

Body pale; head with black bar through eye down to mouth; body with 5 blackish bars, one under 1st dorsal fin, two under 2nd dorsal fin, one on tail base, one on base of tail fin; fins translucent; 1st dorsal with a large black blotch on outer third; second dorsal and tail fins with blackish edges.

Reaches: 2.5 cm.

Habitat: Sand substrate next to reef.
