Lancer Red Banner Blenny

Body elongate; head & snout short and blunt, without spines; snout with a pair of smooth bony ridges; 1 short, unbranched cirrus over eye, shorter than pupil; nasal cirrus short, finger-like, shorter than pupil; 1 row of teeth on each side of roof of mouth; dorsal fin XIX-XXI, 10-13, 1st 10 spines short, similar length, distinct notch between spines and rays, anal fin II, 19-21; pectoral rays 13; pelvics I (internal), 3, inserted before pectoral base, much shorter than pectorals, longest ray reaching the anus; all fin rays unbranched; no lateral line; no scales.

Female & immature male:

anes of 1st 2 spines grey to white (female) to clear (immature); both sexes: dark oblique lines on cheek; white blotches on face, bases of pectorals and pelvics; white spots on body along bases of dorsal and anal fins. Mature and breeding male: colors unknown.

Reaches about 3 cm.

Lives on live and dead massive corals, in sponges on reefs.

Depth range: 1-15 m.
