Clementine Split-fin Goby

Body slightly compressed; head rounded; snout length 5.3-7.3% of SL; no fleshy ridge between the nostrils; no head pores; eyes large, high on side of head, very narrow between them; front nostril a tube, rear a hole with a raised rim; mouth opens at front, upturned; teeth in both jaws a single row of tightly packed uniformly spaced canines, becoming 2 rows at front; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII, none elongate, + I, 8-9; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 8; pectoral fins 15-16; pelvic fins I, 5, completely separate, no frenum between spines or membrane connecting inner rays, rays 1-4 branched, without fleshy or flattened tips 5th ray unbranched, small, tightly bound to 4th ray; no scales on body, base of tail fin with a large rough scale at the top and bottom edge; no lateral line.

Adults translucent white; head with five yellow bars and a yellow blotch at rear of nape: three under eye, first angled forwards through rear of mouth, two down operculum behind eye, a yellow stripe along center of snout; body with 8 long, narrow vertical bars, 2 under 1st dorsal, 1 just behind 1st dorsal, 3 (Y shaped) under soft dorsal, one down tail base, last one down base of tail fin, most of those yellow bars with an obvious orange spot at midbody; centerline of flank with a series of 5 internal white dashes; first and second dorsal fins and anal fin translucent yellow with broad pale whitish outer margins; tail fin translutent white with two yellow bars in midfin, those fusing on lower half of fin; pelvic fins white; pectoral fins clear.

Reaches: 3.3 cm.

Habitat: coral and rocky habitats.

Depth range: 16-159 m.
