Yellow triplefin
Head moderate, body robust; snout blunt, short, usually much less than eye; front of eye and around nostrils spiny; a short, elongate, blunt cirrus over eye, no cirri on nape; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; 3 dorsal fins: III + XII-XIII + 8-9, first fin usually short, usually not reaching base of 2nd spine of 2nd dorsal fin, except in large males, normally some soft rays branched; anal fin II, 16 -17; pectoral 15 (15-16); pelvics I (imbedded), 2; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored 15-16, those on rear part notched, 19-23; cheek, pectoral base and belly unscaled;body scales rough; 3 rows of scales (top row small) scales between straight part of lateral line and base of dorsal fin.
Body and head brown, sometimes with reddish tones, particularly on head; rear of body and tail fin yellowish; iris with red radiating bars; 5 dark bars on body and tail base, 3rd and 4th much closer together than 4th and 5th, a fainter accessory dark bar between 4th and 5th; second dorsal fin with 3 round dark spots on its base, outer edge dark; male with black 1st and 2nd dorsal fin; anal fin with 3-4 dark blotches, at times all black; tail fin with 2 dark bars, separated by a narrow whitish bar, those dark bars variably black, black with red centers, red or yellow-brown.
Reaches 2.6 cm.
Lives in coral formations.
Depth range: 1-10 m.
