Blue-spotted Basslet

Elongate, compressed body; eye large; snout short; mouth opens at front; teeth on jaws, and front and sides of roof of mouth; preopercle edge smooth; opercle with a flat projection; gill rakers long 12-14 (3-4 + 8-10); dorsal fin XII, 9; anal fin III, 8; pectorals rounded, 15-16; pelvics I, 5, with 1st ray elongated, reaching past anal fin base; tail fin slightly forked, with rounded tips; short rays on upper and lower base of tail fin thick and spiny, 4 on top of tail; no lateral line; ~21 lateral scales.

Brownish yellow, head darker; dorsal midline of head with thin blue-white stripe from lower lip to nape; iris yellow, blue-white bars anterior and posterior to pupil; an indistinct yellow/brown bar from center of lower edge of iris to lower jaw, bar bordered before and behind by smaller pale bars that extend up to top of eye; body with 9-12 narrow dark bars between pectoral-fin base and caudal peduncle, bars about as wide as paler interspaces; dorsal fin yellow, with a thin blue-grey margin; series of straight, wavy, or irregular blue-grey bars on basal 2/3 of spinous dorsal fin; basal half of soft-dorsal with a large black ocellus complete ringed in blue-white pigment, ocellus extending onto trunk, distal half of fin with 2-3 rows blue-grey spots; anal fin yellow, with a thin blue-grey margin, 5-6 rows of blue-grey spots , some of which may fuse to form irregular lines; tail fin yellow, with thin blue-grey posterior margin and 6-7 bars formed by vertical rows of of blue-grey spots; pectoral fins translucent, base as dark as trunk bars; pelvic fins blue-grey with yellow spots. Juveniles similar to adults.

Reaches 3.6 cm.

Lives on deep reefs.

Depth range: 123-161 m.

Known only from Curacao.
