Yellow-banded Basslet

Elongate, compressed body; eye large; snout short; mouth opens at front; teeth on jaws, and front and sides of roof of mouth; preopercle edge smooth; opercle with a flat projection; gill rakers long 15-16; dorsal fin XI, 9; anal fin III, 8; pectorals rounded, 15-16; pelvics I, 5, with 1st ray elongated, reaching past anal fin base; tail fin slightly forked, with pointed tips; short rays on upper and lower base of tail fin thick and spiny, 4-5 on top of tail; no lateral line; ~24 lateral scales.

Head and body yellow above, white below; 3 dark bars – 1st bar brown, edged with yellow, narrow, across between eyes and down through eye to lower head profile, with a rear extension along lower edge of opercle; 2nd bar from dorsal origin to bottom of belly, brown edged with yellow, fading on belly, uniform width, running behind pectoral base; 3rd bar yellow brown, a broad inverted triangle under the rear half of dorsal fin and upper tail base, extends from top body profile to bottom profile; dorsal fin bluey grey, with a round black ocellus bordered with blue-white at the lower rear corner of the fin, fin blue grey, with yellow margin & 2-3 inner rows of yellow spots; tail fin with vertical rows of yellow spots; anal fin bluey grey with whitish base, without pale margin, with 1-6 rows of yellow spots over entire fin, pelvic fins bluey white; pectorals clear, with yellow base.

Reaches 5.3 cm.

Lives on deep reefs.

Depth range: 153-233 m.

Known only from Curacao, southern Caribbean.
