Body an elongate oblong, compressed; teeth on jaws in 2 rows, at least at front; outer row of teeth with flattened tips; rear edge of preopercle rippled or finely serrated; gill rakers 21-24 (6-8 + 15-17); dorsal fin XIII,11-12; anal II, 10-12; pectoral 17-18; rear tips of dorsal and anal fins of adult filamentous; tail fin lunate, tips filamentous, in adult, its base without projecting spiny rays; head largely scaled; edge of bone under eye hidden by scales; scales large, 16-18 on lateral line.
Head and body dark brown; scales on back and lower body sometimes with indistinct bluish spots, one per scale; a large, oval black spot with greenish iridescence at origin of lateral line at top corner of operculum; dorsal fin dark brown, with a dark rear filament, and a prominent white to yellow blotch at rear insertion, that extends out along rear border of fin; tail fin dark brown, with an abruptly white to yellowish crescent along the rear edge and center of fin; anal and pelvic fins brown to whitish brown; pectoral translucent, with dark spot at its upper base.
Reaches 12.5 cm
Aggregations in near-bottom waters over coral heads and at the tops of upcurrent edges of small and large dropoffs, on outer reefs as well as inshore on sheltered reefs.
