Body a deep oval, compressed; upper and lower head profiles convex; snout very short, blunt; bone under eye and preoperculum finely serrated; head scaled except for front of snout; bone under eye scaled; teeth conical; gill rakers 22-26; dorsal fin XII, 14-16; anal fin II, 14-15; pectoral fin 19-21; tail fin bluntly forked, upper and lower edges of fin base with 2-3 short, projecting spiny rays; scales large, 17-19 on lateral line.
Head and body whitish to pale to dark grey; sometimes with an orange cast; scales outlined in black; a white spot on upper mid-side, just above lateral line; dorsal, anal, pelvic and tail fins dark grey to blackish. Juvenile black to dark grey; a white spot on center of nape just behind eye; a large white spot on central mid-side on lateral line.
Reaches 14 cm
On coral reefs, juveniles sometimes with anemones.
Depth range 1-55 m
Indo-central Pacific; introduced to SE Florida.
