Verilus pseudomicrolepis (Schultz, 1940)

False-smallscale Bass

Body elongate, tapering, body depth 29-36% SL, distinctly < head length; snout very short; eye huge, 31-38% of head; snout very short; broad and flat between eyes; no spine on shoulder; mouth large, bone of top jaw expanded at rear & largely exposed when mouth is closed, ends ~under mid-eye; top jaws with 1 pair of canines at front, followed by wide bands of elongate, slender teeth; lower jaws with a small pair of canines at front, a small band of slender elongate teeth, then a single row of 8-9 canines on sides, central lateral canines largest and spread apart; roof of mouth with V shaped patch of slender, elongate teeth in center, small conical teeth in 2 rows on sides; preopercle with 5-6 short spines at lower corner which is without small keels; rear of opercle with 1-2 weak spines; gill membranes separate, free from underside of head; gill rakers 17-18 lower, 23-25 total; dorsal fin IX + I, 10, 2 sections joined or nearly so (space between them <2% SL); anal fin II, 9; fin spines all smooth; tail fin forked; pectorals longer than pelvics; scales large, smooth, easily shed; scales on cheeks, operculum with or without scales; lateral line continuous, with ~35 tubed scales.

Dark grey above, paler below; inside gill chamber blackish

Reaches ~18 cm.

Near and above the bottom on deep water reefs.

Depth range: 180-576 m

The Bahamas to Surinam.
