Matador triplefin
Head moderate, body robust; snout blunt, short, usually much less than eye; front of eye and around nostrils spiny; a short, elongate, blunt cirrus over eye, no cirri on nape; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; 3 dorsal fins: III + XII (XI-XII) + 8-9, first fin usually short, usually not reaching base of 2nd spine of 2nd dorsal fin, except in large males, normally some soft rays branched; anal fin II, 16-17; pectoral 15 (14-15); pelvics I (imbedded), 2; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored 14 (13-16), those on rear part notched, 16-23; cheek, pectoral base and belly unscaled; scales above lateral line and behind pectoral base not enlarged; body scales rough; 3 rows of scales (top row smaller) above rear part of lateral line.
Body and head reddish; iris with yellow ring around pupil, red radiating bars; 5 bars on body, first four red, usually indistinct, 5th black, white interspace before that bar wider than 5th bar, without secondary bar or dark blotch; second dorsal fin without dark spots on its base, outer 2/3 dark grey; anal fin with 4-5 dark blotches; tail fin red, or with 2 red bars separated by thin white bar; males with head and body bright red, 1st dorsal fin black, 2nd dorsal fin speckled with black.
Reaches 2.5 cm.
Lives in coral formations.
Depth range: 1-10 m.
Bahamas to the southern Caribbean.
