Head and body deep, strongly compressed; forehead straight; snout relatively short  (11.8-13% SL); top jaw protrusible, large (18.2-23.2% SL); rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; teeth fixed; preoperculum angular, serrated, several small forward pointing spines on lower edge near the corner; gill rakers 14-16; dorsal fin X, 14-15, no notch after spines, membranes between spines not indented; pectoral fins long (35.3-38.8% SL); pelvics relatively short, (26.8-27.4% SL, not reaching anal fin) and rounded; tail fin slightly forked; lateral line scales 55-57; soft dorsal and anal fins mostly scaleless.

Body uniform dark brown; head dark brown; eye dark brown; a violet ring around lower half of eye, violet speckling on cheek & sides of snout; a violet dotted lines under eye, 4 such lines on lower corner of operculum, reaching onto chest; a prominent violet spot at the top corner of the operculum; dorsal fin dark brown; tail fin dark brown, with a pale center; anal fin dark brown; pelvic fins dark brown with a violet leading edge; pectorals clear.

Reaches at least 13.2cm.

Lives on reefs.

Depth range: 3-20 m?

Currently known only from the SW Gulf of Mexico.
