Body elongate; head large, pointed, without spines or papillae; front nostril in a long tube, rear nostril a hole without a flap; mouth large, oblique, opens at the front; front edge of the top lip free of snout; teeth small, pointed, on both jaws (1 row, a second inner row of 2-5 teeth at front) and in 1 row on center and sides of roof of mouth; no opercular spine; dorsal fin in 4 parts, III+I+XIII spines, spine I is longest, a low membrane connecting last spine & 1st ray, + 12 rays, fin starts on head, over preoperculum; anal fin II, 19; pectoral 12, pointed in center, reaches back to over 3rd anal fin ray; pelvic fin I, 3, last ray reduced to a tiny knob the size of the rudimentary spine; tail fin truncate; fin rays all unbranched; body scaleless; no lateral line tubes or canals on body.
Body pale grey; side of belly with rectangular blotch of orange-brown with whitish bar across center; spinal column with series of eight internal, irregular orange blotches; upper & lower trunk profiles each with row of 8-9 orange/brown spots; head grey, densely speckled with fine black dots; nape orange-brown, with several yellow blotches; iris orange, yellowish inner ring; yellow bar before & below eye to front of mouth; operculum pale orange, with two yellow-orange spots on lower edge; 1st dorsal finlet (spines I-III) creamy yellow, with 4 brown cross-bars, 2nd finlet (spine IV) translucent, remainder of fin translucent, with 2-3 irregular rows of round orange-brown spots; anal fin translucent, 2 rows of round orange-brown spots; tail fin translucent, with row of round, mostly orange spots along top & bottom edges & 2 vertical rows across rear 1/3 of fin; pectoral and pelvic fins translucent.
Reaches 2.6 cm
Lives on rocky bottom.
Depth 157-274 m.
Known only from Roatan and Curacao.
