Body slender and elongate; snout without ridge along side, long (59% of head length) and slender, depth 9.8-11% of its length), ridge along top very low, rear part may be toothed or irregularly rippled; operculum with longitudinal ridge angled up towards gill opening, only on front 1/3 of operculum in adult; dorsal 27 rays; anal 2-4 rays; pectoral 14-15 rays; no pelvic fins; tail 10 rays; upper trunk and tail ridges not joined; ridge on flank of body straight, ends near anus; lower trunk and tail ridges joined; main body ridges with toothed edges in adults; trunk rings 18; 0.5 trunk rings under dorsal fin; tail rings 38-39; brood pouch under tail rings 18-20, with folds.
Pale rosy red; 7 dark brown, eye-sized spots along flank and front of tail; ~10 narrow white bars across top of back; lower 1/3 of body and tail whitish, mottled with red; fins clear.
Reaches 20 cm.
Coral and sand bottom
Depth range: 145-265 m.
E Florida to the S Caribbean.
